When I open up a new flat of canning jars, the first thing I do is check each of the jars, lids, and rings to see if they are in good condition.  Sometimes a bad jar slips through the quality control process at the factory.  If you’re using heat on a jar, be it in a water bath or in a pressure canner, you do NOT want to use a bad jar!  The jar can – and will – explode in the canner, turning your water into a total mess.  Now, I’m not saying that you should chuck out and not use bad jars you might get.  As long as the jar is not chipped, it can be repurposed for other uses.
