Until the last year or so, the only place I ever heard of a MOOC was in a gangster movie.  Now, they’re all the rage with the cool kids.  MOOC stands for Massive Open Online Course.  From what I’ve seen to date, these courses originate from around the world, they are generally non-credit courses, and they are generally FREE!  Ever wanted to be a Stanford or MIT student (among others)?  Here’s your chance! It was one of those nights where The Hubs was on the road solving another radio crisis and I didn’t feel like cooking anything too involved just for myself, but I didn’t want to just have bread with butter and cheese, either.  A quick surveying of the contents of the fridge yielded a few ingredients that hadn’t yet turned into science experiments.  I paged through my mental cookbook and decided to make one of my standby bachelorette meals, the rice bowl. Quick Tips: Deleting a message on an iDevice with iOS7

Like most of the Apple fanbois and fangrrrls out there, I updated both of my iDevices to iOS7 on the first day it was available.  There are definitely some new days of doing things that will take some getting used to!  It took me a bit to figure out how to delete a single message from a text “conversation” on my iPhone 5, like maybe I’d used a Redbox code, or I was messaging myself a reminder and wanted to delete the message after I’d done the task.  I stumbled across how to do this.   Read the rest of this entry

Your friendly neighborhood Nerdy Housewife recently had a birthday upon which she turned $39.95 plus shipping and handling.  As is our tradition, The Hubs and I went down to Denver for the day.  We went to IKEA to browse, had Italian buffet for lunch, checked out the offerings at JoAnn Fabrics, and went to the kitchen widget store at a nearby outlet mall.  I had been eyeing up a set of attachments for my Kitchen Aid mixer – the set with the grinder, strainer, and slicer/grater attachments.  Merciful heavens, it was on sale that day, so guess what my birthday present was?! I was pondering the lunch offerings in my cupboard the other day and decided to make Mac and Cheese.  I’ll usually get the Walmart brand thick and creamy variety, but have been hooked on the Betty Crocker variety since it came out … especially after I found it at our local Dollar Tree for $0.50 a box!  I didn’t want to make hot dogs to go with it, but wanted *something* to jazz it up, when it dawned on me … Remember those bacon bits I made a while back? If you’ve spent more than 3.59 nanoseconds on Facebook, you’ve probably seen a gigaload of recipes being shared.  Some look good, but have odd ingredients.  Some look good, but are designed for a Duggar-sized family.  I finally found a recipe right up my alley.  Two – count ’em, 2 – ingredients.  One is in a box.  The other is in a can.  Open, mix, fill pan, bake, enjoy!   Read the rest of this entry

Catch Up Day!

Catch Up Day!
Catch Up Day!

Have you ever had one of those weeks that’s so busy, nothing gets done?  That would be last week on the Nerdy Housewife’s homestead.  No, “busy” doesn’t mean I sat watching TV all week.  It’s been a good kind of busy!

Business for Smiling Dog Systems is picking up!  Over the past month, SDS has doubled the number of transmitters on our monthly maintenance roster.  For these signals, I make the rounds to each station once a month (every 2 months for some farther flung transmitters) to make sure everything’s in good nick. Bountiful Baskets – 31 August 2013

Hooray, it’s Bountiful Baskets time again!  If you have BB in your area, look into it!  If you don’t, you’re missing out!  A simple way to describe BB is that it’s a co-op or CSA without the up-front investment or long term commitment.  Here’s how Sally and Tanya, the heads of BB, describe it:

We hope you enjoyed your experience with Bountiful Baskets Food Co-op (BBFC). BBFC distributes produce baskets, organic produce baskets, artisan bread and sandwich bread every other week. Read the rest of this entry
